Review: Cetaphil Dermacontrol Moisturising Lotion SPF30

Putting on sunscreen every morning is a habit that’s easy to look over because it’s just that extra step to the morning routine that ‘I thought’ wasn’t necessary. And I would be very wrong.

Before I review the Cetaphil Dermacontrol Moisturising Lotion, I want to explain the type of skin I have. I relatively oily skin that tend to get bouts of cystic acne and scarring and to make matters worse, I don’t exactly taking care of my spots while they were erupting or while they were on my face.

This might be a really obvious thing to others but I had recently reaslised that one of the important steps to preventing acne scarring is sun protection. Seriously! I’m kicking myself for not realising sooner.

So get this. When those with skin that tans easily (i.e. my god damn olive skinned self), get a new acne spot that starts drying out any sun exposure can actually make the scarring darker. *silent scream*

However, while I need sunscreen to protect my skin from acne scarring, the regular sunscreens on the market make my face break out. So basically finding a sunscreen that doesn’t irritate my skin has basically become my Catch 22.

Cetaphil Dermacontrol moisturiser for oily skin & acne-prone skin

With that challenge in mind, I ducked into Priceline and came out with the Cetaphil Dermacontrol moisturising lotion. From the packaging, the Cetaphil Dermacontrol moisturiser claims that it’s oil-free (good for oily skin), non-acnegenic/comedogenic (suitable for acne-prone skin) and has a decent SPF of 30 (which, in my opinion, should be the bare minimum for all sunscreen products in Australia).

Cetaphil Dermacontrol Moisturising Lotion spf30 benefits

Before I settled on the Cetaphil Dermacontrol moisturiser, I had also considered a few other quite promising moisturisers from other brands but these products all had a mere SPF of 15 or 20. Skincare brands really need to step up their game.

Super handy pump that you can turn and lock

Unlike other sun protecting lotions and moisturisers, the Cetaphil Dermacontrol moisturising lotion has a decent SPF and doesn’t break me out.

The consistency of the Cetaphil Dermacontrol moisturising lotion isn’t too thick or runny but just in between. There’s no annoying or strong perfume scent to the lotion, which is very consistent with Cetaphil’s brand philosophy and a big plus for people with sensitive skin.

The moisturising lotion applies very thinly and also settles very nicely on the skin, giving it a thin second-skin type of feeling where it’s moisturised and not matte or powdery.

Cetaphil Dermacontrol Moisturising Lotion spf30 flash

Flash photo of Cetaphil Dermacontrol on skin

I know that with a lot of products that contain SPF, there’s an issue with a weird white cast on the skin that comes out when you use flash photography however I tested this and found very little problems on that front. That deserves bonus points!

However, the Cetaphil Dermacontrol moisturising lotion isn’t a product without faults because it was only later that I realised it was causing me issues. As I wore the moisturising lotion througout the day, my skin began to get oily and the lotion that was around my eyes tends to shift into my eyes causing really painful stinging/crying.

The whole time I had thought it was because of my foundation and it was only when I wore the lotion by itself on a no-makeup day that I realised it was the culprit.

Mmm, I’m definitely not a big fan of stinging red eyes.

Product 6/10

  • Non-greasy application
  • Smooth skin-like finish
  • No perfumed scent
  • Light formula

  • Makes my skin produce more oil than usual after a few hours of wear
  • Stings eyes A LOT when lotion gets in them
  • Not waterproof so you can’t really use this as a sunscreen for your face at the beach without having to reply often

Packaging 10/10

  •  Great size bottle
  • Very handy pump dispenser that even locks to prevent any on-the-go accidents

Would I buy it again?

I would probably never purchase this moisturiser again as it irritates my eyes really badly. It’s such a shame because I love other products from the Cetaphil brand. I guess dermatologically tested definitely doesn’t mean it will be entirely safe for every part of your face.

Do you have any recommendations for sunscreen lotions for acne-prone skin?

Cyber Colours Dry Brush Cleaner Metal Container

Review: Cyber Colors Dry Spongie Cleaner for Brushes

Clean Makeup Brushes with Cyber Colours Dry Brush Cleaner

I admit it. Putting off cleaning makeup brushes for a ‘tomorrow’ that never comes is all rosy and sunshine…until I have to get ready and realise, to my horror, that I’ve got exactly 1 clean makeup brush left to use.

Do I want a mix of contour powder in my blush? Perhaps an opaque jet black shadow to double up as a transition shade?

Mmm that’s a NO from me.

I think at that stage of desperation I would be clutching for a short term solution to fix the problem at hand. And fortunately, I have the perfect answer to right here!

This weird magical Cyber Color Dry Spongie Cleaner thing. Yes, that’s really what it’s called.

Clean Makeup Brushes with Cyber Colours Dry Brush Cleaner

The story behind this product was that my friend recently visited Hong Kong and decided to pick this up for me while she was shopping her heart out in Sasa (which is basically the equivalent of Sephora in Asia). From my first glance at the packaging of the Cyber Colors dry spongie cleaner, I thought it worked something like an instant nail polish remover tubs – a sponge that was soaked in some solution that would help clean the brush and then quickly evaporate off leaving the brush dry as a bone.

After having a closer read at the description I realised that it was actually just a sponge. At this point, I was now exceptionally curious about how well it would possibly work considering you weren’t technically ‘cleaning’ any product off the brush.

I had never seen nor heard of these makeup brush cleaners, however, after a bit of research, I found that the Cyber Colors dry spongie cleaner looked exactly like a more popular makeup brush cleaning product called Vera Mona Color Switch sponge. The Cyber Colours version of the dry makeup brush cleaner looked exactly the same as it had a black sponge ring with a bit of white foam in the middle also.

On the packaging, the Cyber Colors Dry Spongie Cleaner claims that when you clean your makeup brushes with it:

  •  It doesn’t require water
  • Allows you to switch colors easily and quickly (they claim it only takes 3 seconds)
  • Causes no damage to your makeup brushes
  • Is reusable and washable

Same black sponge with white foam in the middle as the Vera Mona Color Switch sponge

The large black sponge ring is the main section used for cleaning makeup brushes. When you take a close look it is quite coarse and porous while slightly stiff and rough to touch. I assumed that this rough surface was what helped to scrape products off the makeup brushes since there was no chemical solution to help lift products off the bristles.

The white circle in the middle is a dense firm foam and is used to check if the brushes are clean enough for you to begin dipping into the next product.

Clean Dirty Makeup Brushes

To test out how well the dry sponge cleaned brushes, I loaded my already-dirty makeup brush with some pigmented contour powder and blush and began running the brush along the surface of the cleaning sponge.

While you’re rubbing the brush on the sponge, it feels quite smooth and doesn’t feel like it’s catching any of the bristles or pulling on them. I think that confirms their claim that it isn’t damaging to makeup brushes! Definitely good news for my precious Luxie Beauty brushes. 🙂

Dirty Cyber Colours Dry Brush Cleaner

After going over the sponge a few times with the brush, quite a lot of makeup residue and powder became lodged in between the large holes of the sponge. I was actually surprised because I didn’t realise how much product I put on the brush in the first place!

In terms of how fast it worked, I wouldn’t say it took as short as 3 seconds like they claimed but it was definitely under 10 seconds if you were super thorough about it.

To double check to see how clean the makeup brush was after using the sponge I vigorously rubbed it into a piece of tissue and found very little colour left on the brush. I also tapped out some of the product from the cleaning sponge and found that the makeup that came off the brushes had now become little gritty balls of the powder which easily fell out of the sponge.

Since the tissue was very white, it was quite easy to see the colour that still on the brush but if I were using it on my face I’d definitely not be able to tell there was much residue at all.

Overall, I feel like this product would be extremely handy if you were in a rush and just needed a quick switch of colour, however, as most you would also agree, giving your brushes a proper wash and dry would be best to keep them squeaky clean and hygienic.

Product 9/10

  • Quick and easy to use
  • Not messy at all and everything’s held in the tin
  • Cleans very well with little residue left on the brushes

  • Packaging is quite chunky – probably not a thing you’d want to travel with

Packaging 7/10

The shiny metal container looks very slick and minimalistic while the lid is very tightly sealed for extra safety from the mess.

I feel like the sponge didn’t need to be as thick as it is and would still work the same if it were halved in thickness so that the container could be slimmer in size making it easier to travel with.

Would I buy it again?

I probably wouldn’t need to in all honesty! This dry brush cleaning sponge seems very durable and can be washed with a little bit of water, dried and then reused over and over again.

Thanks for reading! Would you try this or prefer to wash and clean under all circumstances?

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara

Review: Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara Waterproof

Whether you have the most luscious numbers that you could use to fan yourself or difficult straight eyelashes like I do, we can all agree that it can be a bit tricky knowing which mascara does what.

Out of all the types of beauty product I own, mascara is one of the only products that I hardly use. In fact, my impression of mascaras is that they really aren’t that different from each other both in terms of formula or wand and on top of that, they are such a hassle to apply properly. My fellow straight and sparse lashed girls will surely relate to my 10-minute long process of curling my lashes and then apply a couple of coats to try to get a little volume (any volume…please?).

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara Packing1

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara – $21.95 at Priceline

I had originally picked up the Lash Sensational mascara as a present for someone else who then told me how good it was. So in the end, I decided to pick up one for myself, especially seeing as my Benefit Real Lash mascara was on its last leg.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara Packaging

When buying mascaras I like to keep a few things in mind. Curl holding power is the most important followed by a non-clumping formula and then some length and volume.

On the packaging, the Lash Sensational Waterproof mascara claims to create a full fan effect and provide volume to your lashes. I know they haven’t really claimed anything about staying power but I bought it as a gamble and where my last mascara lacked in curl holding power, I’m hoping Lash Sensational will do great in. *fingers crossed*.

And guys? I think I may have stumbled upon a product that is quite amazing!

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara Packing2

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara Ingredients

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara Ingredients and Directions

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara Packing3

The packaging of this mascara is a standard chubby tube with an easy to grip tapered handle as seen with all Maybelline’s mascaras (all 100 versions of them) and is an adorable shade of dusty pink lavender. The girly colour and curvy shape make it the perfect addition to my vanity table, thrown in my purse and anywhere to be honest – as evidenced by the fact that it’s taking over of my fellow beauty bloggers pictures on my Instagram feed.

Despite my love for the aesthetics of the packaging, I’m still a bit reserved about the functionality of it. Did they really have to make it so chubby? I’m sure a slimmer tube using less plastic would have been a great idea too. Imagine how much space it’d save in a makeup if it weren’t so chunky?

I, for one, would love to be able to have a lighter makeup bag but with the same amount of products on hand. Anyone else?

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara1

If you’ve ever tried or even taken a look at the brush wand of the Benefit Real Lash mascara, the Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara wand is quite similar to it in my opinion. They’re both plastic with thin bristles to help separate and comb out the lashes while also getting into the very base of the roots to coat the whole lash length.

As I really enjoyed the natural looking effect of the They’re Real plastic wand I wanted to find something that resembled it without the hefty price tag. They’re Real costs $42 while it’s just $22 for Maybelline’s Lash Sensational. That’s about half of the price so I’d consider that a great deal!

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara Brush

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara Brush1

From memory, the two sides of the mascara brush are actually used for different sections of the eyelashes. Look at how cool these close-up shots of the bristles are! You can definitely see how precisely each bristle can get to the lash roots.

The short side of the mascara wand is meant to help get to the bottom lashes while the longer side is used to ‘fan out’ the top lashes. Since I haven’t quite mastered the short side of the brush yet (shaky hands are to blame), I usually stick to the longer side which works great in getting both my top and bottom lashes anyway.

Difference between eye with mascara and eye with no mascara

From the few occasions I’ve worn this mascara, I can wholeheartedly say I am sold. SOLD! Not only did the mascara not transfer and flake off but it also did what I’ve always dreamed a mascara would do. This mascara held the curl! And boy did it hold them!

I was pleasantly surprised with 6+ hours of curly and fluttery lashes and the long-lost mascara shaped jigsaw piece that was missing from my life. ❤

Product 9/10

  • Great mascara wand
  • Coats lashes and separates them at the same time
  • Dries relatively quickly – I wait for the first coat to dry while doing the other eye
  • Non-clumping formula
  • Adds a nice amount of length
  • Great curl holding power
  • Doesn’t really smudge due to being waterproof – FYI I did shed a tear or two wearing this while watching a touching scene in a TV show and it stayed on so BONUS POINTS

  • Didn’t provide much volume to my lashes
  • Slight alcoholic smell
  • Packaging is a bit more chunky than required

Packaging 7/10

The packaging is an extremely pretty colour and easy to grip in your hands but I wish Maybelline didn’t use so much plastic in their packaging. There’s really no need to make it this chubby to take up excess space in my makeup bag but since I love it so much…I’ll just have to accept it.

Would I buy it again?

100% hell to the yes. I would definitely buy the Lash Sensational mascara again! I’ve worn this mascara several times and I have been wowed every time. In fact, I have to pinch myself each time just to make sure that I’m not dreaming that my eyelashes are really staying up for the first time in my life?!

Thanks for reading everyone and I hope you enjoyed my review/rave about the Lash Sensational mascara!

nivea fruity shine peach lip balm

Review: Nivea Fruity Shine Peach Lip Balm and Swatch

I’ve always been a big fan of the Nivea range when it comes to lip balms because they just work for me. It’s really like saying goodbye to dry lips with a lick of their balm leaving me ready for applying lipstick or wearing it on its own.

In this post, I’ll be quickly reviewing the Peach flavour from Nivea’s Fruit Shine lip balm range. As this is the first one I’ve tried from this particular range I can tell you straight off the bat that these balms smell absolutely divine! Best smelling lip product I have ever used – hands down.

nivea fruity shine peach lip balm

Now when restocking lip balms I usually go for the original or moisturising balm from the Nivea range but I decided to try this Peach flavour because

  1. I love peaches
  2. I wanted a hint of colour on my lips without applying an extra product

As the range’s name suggests, these lip balms give a subtle shine on your lips with its formula and the fine little glittery flecks embedded in it.

When applied this lip balm feels quite thin and liquidy and not so much like an industrial strength barrier so I don’t feel like this would be a good product for those needing extra moisture on their lips. This Nivea lip balm absorbs and rubs off the lips pretty quickly which I don’t really mind because it just means it softens my lips faster on initial application then needing small touch ups throughout the day.

In terms of scent, this lip balm smells exactly like a glass of peach iced tea which is one of my favourites flavours so 100 thumbs up for this! As for the tint of colour I wanted from this Nivea lip balm, I would say that it didn’t give me much of a difference due to my naturally dark lips and the thin formula.

nivea fruity shine peach lip balm swatch

Little bit of shine and colour

All in all this lip balm is a great everyday lip saviour that would work best for people with slightly dry lips. For those who need a more potent product or those like myself wanting a good all-in-one product with a tint of colour to perk up your face then this lip balm won’t be for you.

Product 6/10

  • Easily absorbed
  • Adds a nice shine to your lips
  • Delicious scent

  • Thin formula that needs more frequent application
  • Weak tint of colour

Packaging 10/10

The packaging is perfect for me since the lip and the tube are big enough not to lose. I’ve never had any issues with getting the product out of the tube although there is a common problem with these types of tubes from Nivea which is that you can never ever get that last bit stuck at the base of the tube.

Would I buy it again?

I wouldn’t purchase this lip balm again anytime soon although I really love the scent of it. In comparison, the regular range of Nivea provides better moisturisation and staying power over this peach lip balm.

2015 Christmas Gifts: Beauty Product First Impressions

Hey guys just a quick post of the things I received this Christmas. I think from the looks of things there’s going to be a lot of reviews coming up!

I love how everyone this year decided that makeup is the theme that all my Christmas gifts should follow. I guess everyone got the memo! Haha. 🙂

Thank you to everyone in my life that has given me a little something this year. It really is a first world problem to receive or not to receive a gift for Christmas as these gifts are really just a luxury to have.

Christmas Gifts Haul Beauty and Makeup Products

1. Chi Chi Viva La Diva Lipstick sets in the nude and vibrant colours

First Impression: All lipsticks are very vibrant and glide on extremely smoothly. The finish is almost velvety and from what I can see they don’t transfer much.

2. Chi Chi Nail Polish set in pinks

3. Mac Matte Lipstick in Whirl

First Impression: Super smooth to apply and reminds me of the signature Kylie Jenner-esque brown lip shades.

4. Urban Decay Wende’s Contraband Eyeshadow Palette

First Impression: Majority of the eyeshadows are very pigmented and the shades are between brown neutrals to bright vibrant cool colours that I’m a bit afraid to experiment with.

5. Essence Liquid Lipstick in Show Off!

First Impression: The formula for this lipstick is more like a gloss than an average finish of a lipstick but unlike a gloss this does offer a nicer opaqueness than I had expected.

6. Makeup Blending Sponge from Kmart

7. Mon Purse Monogrammed Black Leather Pouch (Check out my review on it here)
